Charley Toorop

Hi we are going to talk about Charley Toorop.
She was born in 1891 in Katwijk
She lived from 1891 till 1955

Charley Toorop had learned everything she knew about painting from her father (Jan Toorop).

Her father had let a house been build for her in Bergen, That later would be her atelier and many musicians and artists gathered there. On 2 July 1926 she started the art association ‘De Brug’. Their goal was to spread the style that was going on around that time (painting realistic) .Some of the best artists were the ones that started the association people like; Johannes Rädecker, Dick Ket, Johan Polet etc.

She had spend a lot of time to learn her son the fine things about painting, because since her son was born he was good at drawing. When her son wasn’t in Holland she helped him too by organizing expositions to show her sons art and sell them to collectors.

Charley Toorop and Johannes radecker were good friends they met each other in 1919 when Johannes radecker rented an old villa to live in with his wife and child. Charley Toorop lived there with her son. They got good friends when in the 30s Johannes radecker had to make a statue of her father (Jan Toorop) because he died and she helped him by giving him pictures of her father. After the statue was build there was an exposition called ‘De 3 Generaties’ meaning the 3 Generations because you could see the work of Jan Toorop, Charley Toorop and her son.

Charley came on the idea to make a painting of her father but it took her years to finish it and when she had to evacuate in 1942 (because of the war) she was still busy with it.

She left her home and went to Blaricum where she stood at Bart van der leck and she took the painting with her (it was very big). She took it with her again in 1944 when she went back to Bergen again where she worked on it and when she finished it she gave it to the city’s museum so they could put it in their basement.

At the end off 1942 the artificial kidney is finished and he started to test it on patients with the Nier problem, and on 17 march in midnight he tried it on a patient and it was the first time it worked so that was a great succes in his career.

Willem Kolff with his artificial Hart

The Hart-lung machine
When the war was over Willem Kolff started to invent a Hart-lung machine what takes the job of the hart and lungs over when there is a surgery, but in Holland were not the needs to make it that why he emigrated to the united states of America with his family in 1950.
in 1956 the first Hart-lung machine is available to buy made by Willem Kolff.

The Artificial Hart
in 1956 the same year he had the Hart-lung machine finished he started to investigate the possibilities to make a artificial hart.
in 1967 Willem Wolff was promoted to be professor at Salt lake city there he makes a laboratory what is specialized in art organs.
in 1981 the first art hart was implanted what every country in the world was interest, after 112 days the dentist Barney Clark from Seattle it was the first man who got the Artificial Hart , he died from a Pneumonia.

Piet Mondriaan

one of his painting above

Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan was born in 1872 next to the kortegracht in Amersfoort. He came from an very strict Christian family and his father was the head (Principal) of a Christian school.

8 Years later (1890) the family Mondriaan moved to Winterswijk because of his father (his father had to work at the school in Winterswijk). Next to his father’ usual lessons he gave art class too (drawing etc. , his drawings were famous).
So when Mondriaan grew up as a child his father taught him some things about art and drawing. When mondriaan was 17 years old he got a diploma, With that diploma he could give art/drawing lessons on his father’ school And when he was 20 years old he got another diploma with that one he could give art/drawing lessons on college.

When he was 17 his uncle used to come by every now and then to paint the nature and he would go with him. His uncle taught him everything he knew about painting (all the hard things). After he got his diploma for giving art/drawing lessons on college (when he was 20) he decided to go to Amsterdam.
He then lived there at Kalverstraat at acquaintances of his parents.

He began to fit in with the people in Amsterdam and he joined the Arti et Amicitiae association and the painting club St.Lucas.
After 1912 mondriaan moved to Paris and he changed his name he dropped an (a) from mondriaan, Mondrian.

From that on he started signing all his work with Mondrian and not mondriaan...
The reason that Mondrian had to stay in Holland (when he was visiting his parents etc.)
Was that World War 1 had started. But when World War 1 had ended he went back to France where he would stay till 1938 and he would make composition A and B there.
In September 1938 Mondrian left Paris and went to London. But when Holland was invaded and France fell in 1940 (because of the Germans) he left France again and went to New York City where he would stay till he died (1944).

Johannes Radecker

Hi I’m friso and I’m gonna tell about Johannes Radecker also called Johannes Anton Raedecker

He was born in Amsterdam in 1885
Johannes Radecker is a famous sculptor and made some paintings .
At first one thing is to say about his paintings.
In all his work sensuality and sensitivity are in the shape of his work sometimes made it looks to have a religious source.
here to the right you see a famous painting of Johannnes Radecker
One of his naked figurs>

His sculptures He was a better sculptor than painter

In the twenty's and thirty's he was called the godfather of sculpturing in Holland

Something what made him very famous was the statue of liberty he made the sculptures that

are hanging on the pillar. This is the statue of freedom on the dam
When liberation day is there at 4/5 may the queen and other people of influence hang flowers at the statue to honour the people that died and gave their life in war.

When in 1952 he got the assignment to make the statue of liberty on the dam in Amsterdam, he was getting ill he got the disease of his work silicoses, you can get that disease when you sculpture a lot cause the dust that come from the stone. Cause when you breath in the dust from the stone you get after a while dust-lungs (silicoses)
When you use sand stone the risk is the highest.
Everyone knew that the disease Silicoses excited and had serious consequences even dead.
But Radecker never took any precautions and he smoked what you know is also very bad for your lungs

When he had finished his women sculpture what stood for peace at 12 January , the sculpture was hung on the pillar at the dam the sculpture was 3.5 tons heavy. It was a great success for him to make a sculpture that famous at night when the statue was hanged on the pillar at the dam he died in that night.
Johannes raedecker was the only man that could shape a stone that smoothly and so pretty

This was my part about a famous artist Johannes Radecker
